One in particular is a google doc “journal.” This is a document that you, your student, and I will all have access to.  It can just be a fun way for your student to communicate all the cool things you guys are doing at home, or if they just want to say hello! I will be checking these google docs periodically and responding to the students.  If your student has written in it, and I have not responded, just send me an email, and I will be sure to respond.

School Closing Update #3

Hello Families:

I am reaching out to all my students and their families to provide some information on what to expect throughout our closure. Schools are expected to be closed through March 27. Please take a moment to read the following information.

Academics and Educational Resources:

Teachers have been working to develop lessons and resources that you can work on at home with your children. In addition to all curriculum materials being available online, we have developed an Online Resources website, where you can find various resources to help your child keep up with academics. This can be found under the “Students” tab on our district website, www.LaveenSchools.org.

Please remember that your child will need to log in to our curriculum platforms in order to access the material. If you do not have your child’s login information, please contact me and I can provide it to you. One single sign-on through Google gives students access to all of our digital curriculum programs  Watch this video for details on logging in.

Please be aware that all Laveen schools have strict internet filtering when a student connects from our server. Once you use your personal device, this filter is not available. Please monitor your child’s internet usage as they will be able to explore whatever sites your home computer allows. Be sure to watch this informational video, also on the website, for parents on how to filter home internet, Internet Filters to Keep Kids Safe Online

Internet Connectivity

If you do not have wi-fi or are unable to access the internet at home, Cox Communications is offering one free month of internet access to qualifying low-income families through their Connect2Compete program. T-Mobile is also offering an EmpowerED data plan.

Free Meals for Children

Despite school closures, Laveen schools are providing free breakfast and lunch to all children. Families may visit any Laveen school (except Vista) for a grab & go bag. Breakfast is available from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and lunch is available from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday- Friday.

Children must be present to take a meal. Adult meals are not available. Families do not need to register for meals and there are no income requirements.  Children do not need to be Laveen students. The district plans to expand this service to off-site locations in the coming days.

Child Care:

We know that some parents cannot work without childcare. For families needing this service, Laveen’s Kids Club will operate a day camp program that provides structured activities in a safe, supervised environment for children in grades preschool – 6th. This will take place at two locations, Desert Meadows and Paseo Pointe. The cost is $35 a day or $120 per week (preschool is $125 per week). A three-day plan is also available. The hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Our Kids Club staff is cognizant of the importance of a clean environment and incorporates cleaning with a bleach solution as part of their regular protocol. Children and staff showing any signs of illness will be sent home. Please visit our Kids Club page for details.

School Closing Update #2

Dear Parents:

The link below gives you access to all of the resources that the district has put together for you and your child during this time that school will be closed.  Also, Ms. Johnson and I have posted resources and assignments on our google classrooms for your students to complete while they are at home as well.   If you have any questions, please feel free to email her or myself.  Thank you, as always, for your patience and open communication during this time.

School Closing Update

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I know we are in a very unknown time right now and I have not been guided to email my families but many of you are reaching out to me for guidance.  I just want you to know that I can’t imagine not seeing my kiddos for an extended amount of time. I can only imagine how they are feeling right now!   I am hoping to have an email out to you by tomorrow evening with directions on how to access online learning. In the meantime, have your kiddos log into google classroom. I have posted digital learning opportunities in Writing, Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies. I also have daily homework practice that will be posted into the google classroom.  They have become amazing writers.

Please continue to look for emails from our administration and school district.  Those will be very important to read and will help guide all of us!

Sincerely,

Ms. Wolff and Ms. Johnson

Drama Performance

Dear Parents,

IF YOUR CHILD IS IN BAND OR ORCHESTRA, THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT APPLY TO THEM. FOR DRAMA SPECIALS STUDENTS ONLY : )

We are excited to announce our 5th-grade class play, The Quest for Pixie Dust. We will be performing it on Saturday, November 17th at our Trailside Performing Arts Festival. We would like to welcome and invite all parents to come to watch their student(s) perform. Times will be announced after fall break.  The final performance is worth 25% of their final quarter 2 grade.

If your child is unable to attend, Please let me know why they will not be able to attend. Please write me a note or an email, saying my child(name) is unable to attend because…

With a note or an email, I will be able to give your student an alternative assignment, so that missing the performance will not negatively impact their grade.

Each student will have access to their script via Google classroom, if your child does not have access to the internet to access it, please let me know so I can get them a paper copy of their script to practice their lines. Also, we will be wearing costumes, so please look for future updates.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at mtryon@laveeneld.org or call the school.

Weekly Update 9/24-9/28

Updates from Fifth Grade:

As first quarter is winding down, we want to remind everyone about the First Quarter Incentive. In order to participate, students needed to have the Incentive form returned signed. Passing grades as of the day before the incentive are another of the requirements to attend. Also, they will need to continue to be at school every day on time all day. Eligible students will have no more than five absences, tardies, or early releases. Attendance is crucial and we appreciate your support.

First quarter Galileo testing will be NEXT WEEK, October 1st – 4th.. We’re excited to see the growth from the beginning of the year!

Please help your child find a place to keep the school ID so they have it every day. It is a required part of the uniform. Replacement IDs can be purchased in the office for $4.00.

From Mr. Bender:

ELA: Friday we assessed on Cause & Effect and Summarizing.  Grades will be posted in ParentVue shortly after this email. Next week we will be moving to Making Inferences and Quoting from the text. There will be new Spelling words on Monday and Reading Log due Friday. Make sure that your child is asking you to sign their reading log for each day! They are only required to do Monday- Thursday. The weekend is optional.

SCI: Scores from the Muscular System Test have been inputted, and next week we will be focusing on the Respiratory and Nervous Systems.

From Ms. Wolff:

MATH: We have begun chapter two: multiplying whole numbers.  Please be sure that you are having your child practice their basic multiplication facts EVERY NIGHT for about 20 minutes.  If they don’t have these basic math facts memorized, they will not be as successful with the coming chapters.  Also, the subtracting decimals reteach assignments are available on the google classroom, via MOBY MAX. Students may complete the reteach assignments on their own time for an effort grade.  The Subtract Decimals Test is now available for retest through Friday October 5.  Any student with a score of less than 75% is able to retest.  Retests can be taken Tuesday or Thursday after school in ABI or Friday during Paws retesting.

All math homework can be found on the google classroom, and submitted through a google form.  Your child will be shown how to access and submit their homework properly here at school, so they are able to do it successfully at home.  If you do not have an internet connection, or a computer, your child is more than welcome to stay after school on TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS from 2:45-3:40pm for ABI, as a volunteer, to complete their work.  Below are the instructions for accessing the google classroom at home. Your child was given these instructions on paper last Friday, and they have their username and password already filled into the blank slots.

Accessing Google Classroom from Home

1.) Go to www.google.com

2.) Sign in with your student username ____________________@stu.laveeneld.org and their password

Almost everything your child may need to be successful is on our google classroom!

From Mr. Pitts:

We are going to spend the next couple of classes catching them up to where we left off last year in recorder before learning new material. The Panther P.A.C.T.:

Here at Trailside we follow the Panther P.A.C.T.  The P.A.C.T. stands for Personal best, Accountable, Critical thinker, and Tolerant.  It is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.

Personal Best:  Personal best means putting forth 100% effort into work and home responsibilities.

Accountable: Accountable means being responsible and accomplishing tasks.  If you say you are going to do it, you do it in the time allocated.

Critical Thinker: Critical Thinker means being a problem solver and making every effort to independently find appropriate solutions to problems that come up.

Tolerance: Tolerance means being patient, accepting, and understanding of others and their situations.  Put yourself in other person’s shoes.

How to use the P.A.C.T. at home:

It is beneficial to have common language between home and school to reinforce positive behaviors in all aspects of the student’s life.

Examples and importance of using the P.A.C.T.

Personal Best: “I can see you have done your personal best by helping wash the dishes.”

Accountable: “I can see you were being accountable by completing your homework.”

Critical Thinker: “I am proud of you for being a critical thinker when determining which items were garbage, and which were recyclable.”

Tolerant: “Great job being tolerant of your siblings when they were trying to finish their homework.”

Students can spend panther bucks that they earn throughout the week at the panther store.  Items for purchase are pizza with the principals, week of dress down, help a teacher pass, among other examples.  The panther store will be open to students on Wednesdays and Fridays.
