Teacher Bio

Greetings all, my name is Kevin Cohen. I am a third-year special education teacher with Laveen school district. I currently reside in Tolleson, AZ, but I am originally from Chino Hills, CA just outside Los Angeles. I have no children nor a significant other. So, I have devoted most of my life to serving God at my local church and taking care of my recently widowed mother. My father recently passed away so my goal in life is to not only please God but also make my father proud.

One of my greatest hobbies in life is all things aviation. Following high school, I sought to become an airline pilot through the Air Force Academy, but God had shut that door. Next, I sought to become an air traffic controller obtaining my associates degree in such from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. I then proceeded to obtain my bachelor’s degree in aviation management from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL in 2012. After years of applying and waiting for different aviation careers, it appeared the door was shut and I was being led into an entirely different field.

Prior to teaching I taught a small group of fifth and sixth graders at my church’s Sunday school. I also coached young and old adults with developmental disabilities life skills for community integration through disabled adult advocacy organizations for over five years. Through this career I had developed a high level of patience and love for these individuals. A friend, seeing this side of me, suggested that I should pursue a career in special education, to which I attended Grand Canyon University’s master’s in special education program receiving my master’s degree in April of 2019.

One of my greatest passions in life is to help children struggling in school and life due to disabilities or emotional distresses. For I know how difficult it can be in school when undergoing internal struggles because I too suffered from depression and suicidal tendencies. By the grace of God, I was rescued from a life of destruction through the act of caring teachers and family, and it is my desire to share the same hope and love with others because I believe through hard work and dedication everyone, no matter what, has the potential to become someone great.

I look forward in going forward with you all.
