Classroom Updates

March 30, 2020 – The Giver – Chapter 14

Good morning, intelligent students!

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend. I feel like the news is coming around, but if you haven’t read your email or if you haven’t seen an update on Facebook, Governor Ducey has made the decision to close all Arizona schools for the remainder of the 19-20 school year. This is not a shock to many, but it still hurts for me to hear the definitive decision.

What this DOES NOT mean:

  • You don’t have to try
  • You give up
  • You stop being positive
  • Your teachers and administration stop caring about you
  • You have no where to go

No matter what decisions are made in the coming days and weeks, there is one thing I am certain of – I am here for you no matter what. Do you have a question? Ask me! Do you need to talk? Call or email me! Are you frustrated, confused, upset, or angry? Let me or someone help you!

Please, please, please know that I am here for you no matter what. I love you all so much and want to make sure you are going to be okay. I have the most resilient, intelligent, and selfless students. We are here for each other!

Love,

Mrs. Harp

March 27, 2020 – Catch Up!

Good morning, nuggets!

I hope you all are well and staying healthy. Social distancing? Staying in? Good! Okay, today you can take a breath. Get your Writing into the Day and Reader’s Response Journal completed and you are DONE for today! Today is going to be a day where you can double-check and make sure all of your tasks and assignments are completed.

Remember, don’t get frustrated or upset that you have work that you haven’t done. Take your time, do what you can, take a break, and come back to it when you feel refreshed. My goal is for you to feel successful and accomplished. Each and every one of you have the skills it takes to be very successful. Promise!

Make sure these tasks are completed in Classroom:

  • AZM2 Practice
  • Chapter 11 – The Giver – Inferences
  • Chapter 12 – The Giver – Inferences and Text Structure
  • Chapter 13 – The Giver – Summarization
  • Writing into the Day and RRJ for each day

Let me know if you need anything, at all! I love and miss you all terribly!

Love,

Mrs. Harp

March 25, 2020 – The Giver, Chapter 12 and Updates

Good morning, my sweet humans!

It was so good to be able to talk with many of you yesterday! If I haven’t gotten to talk with you, I will be calling within the next few days. So, first thing’s first – I will be going to the school again tomorrow to make packets for anyone who can’t work from their phone or who does not have the technology to do their school work. I need to know TODAY, so I can get everything ready for you. Let me know if you need a book/novel for home, because someone can come pick one up for you. This is super important, because I don’t know when we’ll be able to do this again.

Our assignment today is working with inferences using The Giver. I made a copy for each of you, so all you have to do is erase the lines, and type in your answer. You can type using a different color or font, just make sure I can read the answer. If it’s a multiple-choice question, just highlight the answer. (Classroom code: cs3a5vx)

Don’t forget to do the “bell work” or in my class, Writing into the Day, for each class. That is how you are getting your attendance taken for school.

You guys are doing such an amazing job of making this transition on learning online. I am so incredibly proud of you all! Love you, forever!!!

Love,

Mrs. Harp

March 24, 2020 – The Giver, Chapter 11

Good afternoon!

What a busy morning! I have been calling, emailing, and talking with your parents to make sure everyone feels confident with our new type of school. If you feel overwhelmed or confused by something, call or email me. I am here for YOU!

Our assignment is on Classroom (class code: cs3a5vx) for today. I have even put a video to explain the assignment (I look so weird on video…ugh.).

Make sure you are doing your Writing into the Day Doc so that you are marked “present”!

Love you all so much!

Love,

Mrs. Harp

March 23, 2020 – Review of AZM2 Test Practice and Updates!

Good morning, Loves!

I hope everyone was able to get outside for a little while and practice social distancing while doing so. I had ran both days, and took my kiddos for bike rides. I am trying to teach Jax, my oldest, to ride a bike without training wheels…it’s not going so well. It’s all good; we’ll keep trying!

Today, we are going to do some AZMerit test practice, because, even though state assessments are uncertain, SO many of you grew on your last MAP assessment, and I don’t want you guys to forget any of what you have done up to this point!

All of your assignments will be in Classroom, BUT I am going to start making calls to you guys to check up on you and answer any questions you may have.

You MUST complete our Writing into the Day to be counted “PRESENT” for the day. You might do it at 9 in the morning or 9 at night. It needs to be done, though, each day. DON’T FORGET!

Also, I will begin uploading videos for you guys starting tomorrow. I will do a test one today. These will be in our Classroom. We are going to pick up on The Giver, Chapter 11. You will have a copy of the assignment to do as well. The novel is online, so we are all good!

To Do:

  • Go to Classroom (cs3a5vx)
  • Complete Writing into the Day – 3.23.20
  • Complete Independent Reading and RRJ 3.23.20
  • Watch Video
  • Complete assignment

**Wait until 10 am to do this today; I am getting everything together for you!**

DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR ASSIGNMENTS! (I don’t want to sound like I’m yelling, but this is super important because it’s going in the grade book.)

Love you all so much,

Mrs. Harp

March 20, 2020 – Catch Up!

Hi, Lovebugs!

Happy Friday! What a week?! I don’t want anyone to stress or feel overwhelmed, so, instead of another assignment, our tasks today will be the following:

ONE: Finish all work that was assigned this week.

TWO: Join our class Facebook page – Mrs. Harp – Far From Home

THREE: Join our school Facebook page – Laveen Elementary School

FOUR: Read your book for at least 45 minutes – totally doable. Go to Classroom and fill out the form for TODAY.

FIVE: Do something KIND for someone. This can be as simple as cleaning your room for your parents or making yourself something to eat.

Just remember how much you are loved by me!

Love,

Mrs. Harp

March 19, 2020 – Interesting…

Hi, Buttercups (or, what’s up, Buttercup?)!

It’s still kind of a dreary day, but hopefully we will get back to our Arizona sunshine and be able to go outside and have some fun. Have you tried reading your novel outside? Put a blanket down and find a place to read. It’s nice, especially when we are so limited to where we can go. Think of it like being able to read wherever you want in the classroom during Independent Reading time.

Did you wear your favorite hat to “school” today? I did! Yay!

Today, you are going to do some research on what YOU find interesting in the world. Here are your steps:

ONE: Go to our Google Classroom and find the assignment for today. (code: cs3a5vx)

TWO: Choose a topic that interests you. Example: Dancing/Types of Dancing, How ____ is made, Why do we have to _____?, Food, etc.

THREE: Research – This is where you gather information about your topic. You will put information into the Doc that I have created. Don’t forget to copy/paste the URL so that you are not plagiarizing!

FOUR: Write an INFORMATIONAL essay, slideshow, video, poster, or any other platform you would like about your findings.

***Here is the AZMerit rubric. Read the rubric before you begin your assignment, so you know what the expectations are!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B18FKCEue8YWZjF2Q0NHUTNwQVE/view

FIVE: Once you have completed your task, make sure you share it with me (awright@laveeneld.org) and/or turn it in through Classroom.

Writing Standard W 7.2 – I can write an informational essay to examine a topic of my choice and convey ideas, concepts, and information using relevant content, in a logical organizational pattern.

I miss each and every one of you so, so much! Since tomorrow is Friday, what do you think about a Dress Down Day? I won’t make you turn your dollar in…shhhh, Don’t tell Dr. Caplinger. It will be our secret! Love you, all!

Love,

Mrs. Harp

March 18, 2020 – Movie Time!

Hello, my nuggets!

It’s going to be a dreary day here in the Valley. What is better than snuggling up, watching a movie, and eating snacks on a rainy day? So, this is what we’re going to do today…

STEP ONE: What movie are you going to watch today?

STEP TWO: Read at least THREE reviews that were written about that movie. Choose reviews that you agree with and reviews that you disagree with.

STEP THREE: Go to Google Classroom and find our assignment for today. Copy and paste those reviews in the Doc that I created. For each review, write a short CER paragraph (5-7 sentences) arguing why you agree or disagree with the review. So, to recap, that would be a total of three paragraphs.

STEP FOUR: Watch the movie!!!

STEP FIVE: Re-visit the reviews you chose.

STEP SIX: After watching the movie, have you changed your stance on agreeing/disagreeing with the reviews. Why or why not?

Objective: You know how each thing you do is connected to a standard in our ELA reading and writing class? Well, this task is W 7.1 – I can write a logical argument with relevant evidence, credible (from the movie) evidence, and sound reasoning.

***Tomorrow is wear your favorite hat to “school” day!

I miss you all so much!

Love,

Mrs. Harp
