Absences: If you are absent from school, you are responsible for obtaining the assignments, notes, instructions, etc. from a responsible classmate. Your absence is your responsibility. You have 1 day for every day you are absent to complete your makeup work. If you are absent when a quiz is given, you will be expected to make up that quiz upon your return.

Tardies

You are expected to arrive in class and be in your seat and working on bell work by the time the class begins. Excessive tardies to class can result in disciplinary action.

Course Topics

  • Grades will be broken down into units. Each unit will consist of:
  • Daily grades (Journal, blasts, skills practice, participation, etc.)
  • Novel Study (please look for letters home regarding specific readings in each unit)
  • Extended Writing Projects (each unit will have a different focus for writing such as narrative, informative, etc.)
  • Tests/Assessments (End of Unit Tests, quizzes, etc.)

Grading

You will receive two grades in this class, an academic grade and an effort grade.

Academic Grade

The academic grade is based on the standards in the course. You will be assessed using those standards and assigned a proficiency level for each standard.

  • A student is considered Highly Proficient (A) if they score 90% or above on a standardized assessment.
  • A student is considered Proficient (B) if they score 80% to 89% on a standardized assessment.
  • A student is considered Partially Proficient (C) if they score 70% – 79% on a standardized assessment.
  • A student is considered Minimally Proficient (D & F) if they score less than 69% on a standardized assessment.

You may reassess one standard per week. When you reassess, you will keep the highest score. The goal is to ensure that you review the material and ask for help prior to attempting a reassessment.

Effort Grade

The effort grade is designed to reflect practice assignments, participation, and work completion. Each assignment is given a point value, and the grade is determined by dividing earned points by total points.

Effort grades are assigned as follows;

  • Excellent = 80% – 100%
  • Satisfactory = 60% – 79%
  • Needs Improvement = 0% – 59%

All late work within the effort grade is susceptible to a 10% penalty. Late work due to an absence does not receive this penalty. Late work must be submitted within the end of the quarter.
