2nd Grade Academics

Partnering with you as parents, it is our goal to have every child achieve the following goals to complete 2nd grade on grade level. These goals are rigorous but necessary to be College and Career Ready at the end of their schooling.

Reading:

  • Meets Standard or higher on NWEA
  • Reading 92 words per minute
  • Reading all 2nd grade sight words and multisyllabic words
  • Summarize text and determine central message, lesson, or moral
  • Identify character traits in fiction text
  • Determine the main idea of expository text
  • Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text

Math:

  • Use fluency strategies for addition & subtraction facts under 20
  • Fluently add & subtract numbers with the sums and differences within 100
  • Apply place value and represent numbers up to 1,000
  • Tell time to the minute hand
  • Addition of money up to $20.00
  • Build conceptual understanding of multiplication and number sense
  • Can restate the question, select and apply the appropriate operation and problem solving strategy when solving a problem. 

Writing:

  • All writing must include correct capitalization, punctuation, spacing, and spelling of sight words and word families
  • Narrative writing must include a beginning, middle, and end; transition words such as when, then, and after; setting, characters, and details; at least 8 sentences; and dialogue
  • Informative writing must include a paragraph with a lead that catches the reader’s attention; at least 5 logically sequenced sentences; descriptive words and details; transition words such as also, before, after, then; and a closing sentence
  • Students are expected to use the writing process including planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing
  • Indenting a paragraph

 

In 2nd Grade students will be learning using research-based curriculum.
