Hello! It has been an exciting week in our kindergarten class. We started our Project Based Learning through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.). The students started off their project with a story about The Three Little Pigs. After listening to the story, the students were grouped and were given the chance to answer this question: ” If you were to build a home for the three little pigs, what and how will you build it to protect them from the Big Bad Wolf?”
On the second day, the students brainstormed and verbally shared their ideas with their teams. After which, on the same day, they were asked what materials they will use. The whole class agreed on utilizing every day recycle materials. So they were given a few days to collect and bring to school their desired materials from home. On the next day, they were asked to draw their “blueprints” for the house they were planning on building. Finally, on the last day, they had the chance to revise or keep their blueprints, thus, they were given an hour to build and create the piggies’ home.
It was such an inspiring morning to see and hear 5 year olds collaborate. disagree, compromise and celebrate their differences by producing their first ever structure as a team. With the help of a couple of mothers and our very own Instructional associates, namely, Ms. Maria, Ms. Olivia, and Ms. Carolyn, the teams successfully became engineers and architects of the hour or so. According to Ms. Olivia, ” One of the girls in my team was really stepping up to the role as the main architect of the project. She knew exactly how long to cut the materials, how and where it must be placed on the product. I was surprised but very impressed.”
On Monday, May 22nd, their structures will be put to the ultimate test. Each building will be subjected to the huffing and puffing of the Big Bad Wolf. We will then decide which home can really protect the pigs and can withstand the wolf’s powerful breaths. So until then. We will keep you posted and will surely let you know who wins the best engineered home. Don’t forget to check out our gallery for the initial parts of the project up to the final display. We hope that you will enjoy them!
