Thank you for making this year the best by being the best that you can be each day. May you enjoy your summer break. Keep it fun and safe! So long and I will miss you all!
Our Class’ Project Based Learning
Hello! It has been an exciting week in our kindergarten class. We started our Project Based Learning through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.). The students started off their project with a story about The Three Little Pigs. After listening to the story, the students were grouped and were given the chance to answer this question: ” If you were to build a home for the three little pigs, what and how will you build it to protect them from the Big Bad Wolf?”
On the second day, the students brainstormed and verbally shared their ideas with their teams. After which, on the same day, they were asked what materials they will use. The whole class agreed on utilizing every day recycle materials. So they were given a few days to collect and bring to school their desired materials from home. On the next day, they were asked to draw their “blueprints” for the house they were planning on building. Finally, on the last day, they had the chance to revise or keep their blueprints, thus, they were given an hour to build and create the piggies’ home.
It was such an inspiring morning to see and hear 5 year olds collaborate. disagree, compromise and celebrate their differences by producing their first ever structure as a team. With the help of a couple of mothers and our very own Instructional associates, namely, Ms. Maria, Ms. Olivia, and Ms. Carolyn, the teams successfully became engineers and architects of the hour or so. According to Ms. Olivia, ” One of the girls in my team was really stepping up to the role as the main architect of the project. She knew exactly how long to cut the materials, how and where it must be placed on the product. I was surprised but very impressed.”
On Monday, May 22nd, their structures will be put to the ultimate test. Each building will be subjected to the huffing and puffing of the Big Bad Wolf. We will then decide which home can really protect the pigs and can withstand the wolf’s powerful breaths. So until then. We will keep you posted and will surely let you know who wins the best engineered home. Don’t forget to check out our gallery for the initial parts of the project up to the final display. We hope that you will enjoy them!
Muffins with Mom
Our kindergarteners enjoyed a morning as their moms read a story to them and shared a muffin together last Friday, May 12, 2017. There were 19 out of 23 moms who attended our event. It was a morning filled with tenderness, joy, and strong bonds between the mother and the child while establishing the importance of reading a book to one’s child for future literacy success. To all moms who participated, THANK YOU very much! You are all welcome to view our Muffins with Mom album in our Gallery section.
Field Day 2017
Last Friday, May 5th, our kindergarteners participated in our school’s annual Field Day hosted by our P.E. coaches. Mr. Epacs and Mr. Carroll together with their special area team made our Cinco de Mayo a real fiesta! The students were able to enjoy 13 fun-filled and exciting stations. Aside from fostering camaraderie, this event gave our 5 year-olds a chance to strengthen their sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability through physical exercise and activity. So THANK YOU coaches for a day “field” of memories to cherish! Please don’t forget to check out our pictures in our gallery section.
The Works of Magic “Ee”
This coming week, our class will be working on the long vowel sounds. We will learn how to decode, read and write words that have these sounds with Super Hero Ee at the end.
I hope you’ll enjoy the videos below to help your child master the long vowel sounds in words!
So long Ladybugs!
Our class have been observing the life cycle of ladybugs for the past 2 weeks. Today marked a very important stage for we were able to release them so they can continue to grow.
The kindergarteners completed their ladybug journals and were able to note the different stages of a ladybug’s life cycle. They obviously had so much fun learning about them. Now that they have reached their adult stage we all have to say, “So long ladybugs!”
Please check out our gallery for pictures!
Thanks, Ms. Helen!
The classroom presentation conducted by Ms. Helen and Bus Driver Lynette was a big hit for all the kindergarteners. They were all able to see, touch, hear, and experience how to be in a real city bus. The students were also able to sing and pretend to be the bus driver and had to come up with a place they will have to take the passengers if they had the chance someday. So thank you Ms. Helen and Ms. Lynette for such a wonderful experience.
If you want to see some 5-year old city bus drivers, please check out our gallery for some pictures. I hope you will enjoy them!
Valley Metro is Visiting Us
On Monday, April 10th, a Valley Metro representative will be visiting our kindergarten class to help us culminate our thematic lesson in reading. We have been learning about the different kinds of transportation and their importance to the community. Ms. Helen will be presenting to all 4 classes in 2 separate sessions. She will be reading a book and will be discussing the new ways of transportation that the Valley Metro is offering. She will also be bringing with her a Valley Metro bus which the students will be allowed to experience sitting on the driver’s seat. We are all excited for the visit! We can’t wait to sing, “The wheels on the bus go round and round…!”
2017 Laveen Spring Festival
I would like to take this opportunity to THANK all of the families who came and joined the Laveen Spring Festival last Friday, April 7. It was, again, another evening filled with fun activities, songs, dances, food, and laughter. What a beautiful way to welcome the warm days of spring here at Laveen!
