September Book Orders

Support Your Child’s Reading Success!

Dear Families,

Did you know? Kids who read for just 20 minutes a day are more successful in school and life. Ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs is an easy way to find the best books that are just right for your child’s grade and interests.

Here’s how:

I am sending home Scholastic Book Order Flyers today with your children.  If they are interested in ordering books, awesome!! There are 2 ways you can order:

  1. The most preferred is online (Link to Scholastic Website), where you would go to the website and create a parent account, and use our class code TLZLP.  You can order/pay online and it will get sent to our class account.

  2. OR Complete the form on the back of the flyer, and send your child to school with the EXACT CASH or a check made out to Scholastic.

I will be sending these home about once a month so feel free to order as much as you want.  The more books we order, the more points we get as a class, and the more free books that come our way!  On the back of the flyer from today, there is an opportunity for a free book if you spend $25, and also free Pokemon stickers with any order. 🙂  Orders need to be submitted by Friday, 9/14.

As soon as your order is delivered to our classroom, I will send it home with your child.

Plus every order you place earns FREE Books for our class to share.

Thank you for your support and happy reading!

Weekly Update 8/27-8/31

Good Afternoon Parents,

Welcome to week four!  We are off to a great start, with our first month already almost in the books.  A few things to remember for this week.

Galileo testing is Monday-Wednesday of this week.  Please ensure that your student arrives to school on time, and gets a healthy breakfast.  If they don’t eat breakfast at home, they are more than welcome to arrive at school at 7:00am for breakfast here in our cafeteria.

Monday-Reading

Tuesday-Math

Wednesday-Science

*Tomorrow is the PTA meeting at 6:00pm in the Black Box at TSP.  Everyone is welcome.

*Early release next Wednesday, September 5th.  Students are released at 11:30 am

*Curriculum night Tuesday, September 11 from 5-7pm in the fifth grade classrooms.  More details to come.

ELA: This week we finished up components of plot.  Next week we will move to comparing characters and settings within a text.  Reading Logs will be handed out every Friday, and due back the following Friday.  Students need to read a minimum of 4 nights a week for 20 minutes each.  Check and sign their logs each night.

Science: We will be starting to study the Human Body this week.  Get ready to quiz your child on the bones, muscles, and other systems in the body!

Math: This week we are finishing up with ch. 1, place value, and will begin ch. 2 on Wednesday.  In chapter 2 we will be studying multiplying whole numbers. Due to Galileo testing this week, I will not be giving math homework.   Also, beginning the week of September 17th, math homework will be completed online through google classroom.  If you come to curriculum night on September 11 from 5-7 pm (more details about this will be coming out in the next week or so), I will be explaining how our online homework works and showing parents how to access it.

Social Studies: We will be diving into our online curriculum, Discovery Education, to learn more about exploration of North America and its colonization.

Mr. Pitts (Music Class): This week, 5th grade music students continued working on musical form (the blue print of music). Students reviewed the piece we worked on last week with a partner on our African drums. We followed up by adding in a new section to the piece of music that was entirely created by the students. Some groups will be continuing this lesson into next week as we have testing, while others will continue form in a different context: Movement.

PTA: We are off to an amazing 2018-2019 school year. To continue to stay so effective and prepared we are kicking off our first PTA fundraiser. Your child attended the informational assembly that outline what they get to sell and all the AWESOME prized they will be able to earn for their sales. This is sponsored by our fabulous PTA to help raise much needed funds to improve and benefit, the school, staff, and most importantly your kiddos!!!! So use these awesome cups as a great holiday gift and help us keep Trailside on top of our “A+” game! Details on deadlines for money and form collections are attached to this email. Please enjoy the complimentary cup to help you pump up your buyers! On behalf of PTA we GREATLY appreciate all your support this year.

The Panther P.A.C.T.:

Here at Trailside we follow the Panther P.A.C.T.  The P.A.C.T. stands for Personal best, Accountable, Critical thinker, and Tolerant.  It is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.

Personal Best:  Personal best means putting forth 100% effort into work and home responsibilities.

Accountable: Accountable means being responsible and accomplishing tasks.  If you say you are going to do it, you do it in the time allocated.

Critical Thinker: Critical Thinker means being a problem solver and making every effort to independently find appropriate solutions to problems that come up.

Tolerance: Tolerance means being patient, accepting, and understanding of others and their situations.  Put yourself in other person’s shoes.

How to use the P.A.C.T. at home:

It is beneficial to have common language between home and school to reinforce positive behaviors in all aspects of the student’s life.

Examples and importance of using the P.A.C.T.

Personal Best: “I can see you have done your personal best by helping wash the dishes.”

Accountable: “I can see you were being accountable by completing your homework.”

Critical Thinker: “I am proud of you for being a critical thinker when determining which items were garbage, and which were recyclable.”

Tolerant: “Great job being tolerant of your siblings when they were trying to finish their homework.”

Students can spend panther bucks that they earn throughout the week at the panther store.  Items for purchase are pizza with the principals, week of dress down, help a teacher pass, among other examples.  The panther store will be open to students on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Weekly Update 8/20-8/24

Dear Parents and Guardians,

After two weeks of school, we are closer to being back in the rhythm of school. Hopefully, students are getting better at getting up and arriving at school on time. We appreciate your help each and every morning. Thank you for your support in checking your child’s homework each night! It is crucial they stay current with the homework and assignments in 5th grade.

We often make time for a healthy snack before lunch. Students can bring their own snack to eat. We also gladly accept donations of healthy snacks to share with the class.

We have updated our email list to include all the email information you sent us on our forms. If there is a family member that is still not receiving our update, please let us know and we will add the new email.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email either of us: Ms. Wolff at lwolff@laveeneld.org and Mr. Bender at ebender@laveeneld.org.

Just a reminder:  NO SCHOOL this Wednesday, August 22nd!

Thanks!

Reading: We have been working on identifying the components of Plot in any story and will continue to do so next week as well!  The students will be taking a Vocabulary Quiz on the 7 words from the first story on Tuesday.  We have been reviewing daily and they know to study the definitions and parts of speech of each word.

Spelling: At the beginning of each week, we will take a Spelling Pretest.  The students are to study the words and complete a Spelling Packet during the week at home.  The Spelling Packet is typically due on Friday, the same day that they will take the Spelling Test.  Please ensure they are completing the homework and also studying their words to be successful!

Reading Logs: Reading Logs will be introduced next week.  They are required to read for 20 minutes a night, for a total of 4 nights.  In addition, they will write a 3 sentence summary and get your signature!  Be on the lookout for the log.

Science: We will start off by learning about the human body and its systems.

Math:  This week in math we will be working on understanding decimal place value and how to order numbers through the thousandths place.  Please look for math homework Monday through Thursday of this week on paper, called My Math Homework. Beginning after Galileo (next week), math homework will be online only.

Social Studies: We will be diving into our online curriculum, Discovery Education, to learn more about exploration of North America and its colonization.

Mr.Pitts (Music):  Students have begun learning a piece of music while using African drums. The piece had two different sections and we started talking about Form (tracking musical patterns) and how to use it in a musical context. Students identified the form of the piece and we slowly added instruments through notational practice. Students will be asked to add a new section of the piece next week and connect it to the form (identifying the form and labeling the new section).

I am sending the email today, but you will be getting regular updates from either myself or Mr. Bender about both classes.

Just a few reminders for this week:

– Tomorrow morning the students will line up at our grade level spot.  Our school is going to be a closed campus this year, and the gates will be closed until 7 am.  Parents will have to go through the office to enter.

– Please have them come in uniform and bring any necessary supplies/backpack/forms completed.

ALL forms need to be completed by THURSDAY– students will be receiving a dress down incentive Friday for getting them all turned in.

– Students should have received a new ID today. If they did not, they will have one by the end of the week.  Once they receive this ID, it is a mandatory part of their uniform and NEEDS TO be worn daily. If the ID is lost or damaged, a new one will need to be purchased in the front office for $4.

– Students will also be using agendas this year.  Please get in the habit of checking/signing this every night with your child!

We look forward to working with you and your children this year! Thanks in advance for your help, support, supplies, snacks, and the many other things you will offer.
