Don’t forget that our special areas teachers have created a Hyperdoc with fun activities for your child to participate in. You can find it in our Google Classroom or here.
Updates Regarding Google Classroom:

Now that most of our families are on Google Classroom, we are going to be making some changes beginning tomorrow (Monday), March 30. Bell Work will stay the same.
1. We will be organizing our lessons by week instead of by English and Spanish. See picture below:
image.png
When you click on this, you will see a new lesson each day this week.
2. We are now going to be only assigning one lesson/subject a day in addition to bell work. Here is what the week will look like:
Monday– Reading + Bell Work
Tuesday– Writing + Bell Work
Wednesday– Math + Bell Work
Thursday– Social Studies + Bell Work
Friday– Science + Bell Work

3. All assignments will be due on Sundays. We will then grade the assignments.
4. If you would like your child to have additional practice, you can find this in the One Stop for Resources folder. This folder contains our OPR videos, our Symbaloo page, and much more. We will be continuing to add activities to this folder as well. None of these activities will be graded- they are just for extra practice.
Symbaloo has links to websites that your child can go to and practice other skills, such as Starfall and ABCya.
That’s all, folks! Please do not hesitate to contact us at khenry@laveeneld.org and iceballoszuniga@laveeneld.org if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your patience and support, we appreciate it!
We miss your children so much!

Parade!

We are excited to announce that on Friday, March 27th the Paseo Pointe Staff will be participating in a Parade. The Parade will begin at Paseo Pointe at 1:00 and travel through our community then head to the bus zone communities as well.  Attached you’ll find a map so you can stand in your driveway or sidewalk as we pass by. To ensure the safety of our staff and students please do not approach cars. We are excited to see as many of our students as possible!

More About Our Online Learning and FAQs

We want to start off by saying thank you so very much for your patience and support this week while we launched our new Google Classroom. We do not want your children to lose any of the important information that they learned this year, and we still want them to continue learning so that they can be successful. We greatly appreciate that you took the time to log your children into Google Classroom and that you are making sure they complete assignments. We know that there has been a lot of confusion and technical difficulties, but please know that we are so grateful that you persevered and set time aside to learn how to log your children in. This is all new and different for us as well, and we are learning as we go along, just like you. You have all been wonderful this week and words cannot express the gratitude we feel for the patience and support. So again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
We wanted to include a “frequently asked questions” section of this email, since many of the questions we have seen are about the same things. Hopefully, this will help address some of your concerns and make things easier for you. We know that this has all been confusing for many of you, and we want to make this as easy to understand as possible. So, here are some frequently asked questions:
Q: My child has finished a Nearpod lesson. How do I save his/her work?
A: Since the lessons are all on Nearpod, once your child has completed the lesson, all of his/her work is automatically saved. Mrs. Ceballos and I are able to log into our teacher accounts on Nearpod and view your child’s work from there.
Q: When I submit an assignment, it says that no work is attached. Do I submit it anyway? What does this mean for my child’s grade? Should I be attaching something?
A: We are able to see on our end when an assignment has been turned in. We are also able to see the work that has been completed on Nearpod, which is how we’ll grade the assignment. There is no need to attach anything, because the work is all on Nearpod. Google Classroom does not understand this, which is why it tells you there is nothing attached. 😂 All you need to do is submit the assignment, and then the job is done! IF you are able to save & attach it please feel free to do so!
Q: How does grading work? What does my child need to do each day to receive a grade?
A: Students are graded on each subject area and will receive one grade per subject area per week. (One English reading grade, one Spanish reading grade, one math grade, one science grade, one social studies grade, and one writing grade.) These grades are based on completion of the Nearpod lessons. As far as bell work, which is what the Padlet is being used for, this will be an effort grade and we are also using this to track our daily attendance. In order to receive a passing grade for all subjects this week, all assignments need to be completed by Friday, 3/27. As far as what to do each day, students should be logging into Google Classroom and completing the Nearpod lessons that are assigned for the day as well as answering the bell work question on the Padlet. ** Some changes will be made next week**
Here are a few reminders as well:
1. When you post your child’s response to the daily question in the Padlet, please be sure that your child’s name is in there so that we can give them the effort grade as well as track his/her attendance. We are required to fill out a form each day that states who has logged in, and the Padlet is our way of checking this. If it says “Anonymous,” we will not know who it is. You can also attach a picture or video (which we have loved seeing) instead if you’d like and that will count as well.
2. We receive new updates and instructions about our online instruction all the time and things can change from one day to the next. For this reason, please be sure to check your email each and every day so that you can be up to date on everything and be aware of any changes. The district and our administration send out emails often as well. Please be sure to read any emails you receive in their entirety, because they may answer questions you have or may include new changes.
3. If you have any questions for us, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can comment directly on Google Classroom when you have a question and we can answer it on there if that is easier for you. Mrs. Ceballos and I can both see your questions when you ask on Google Classroom, so you would not have to look for my email address or hers.

More Info

Good Evening families,

This week has been filled with many unexpected things. As your child’s teacher and your partner to support them in anyway possible! I want to remind you that we are available through email or a scheduled phone call.

We really miss not being with our kids and can’t wait to see them again.  Unfortunately, we are not sure exactly when that will be. In the meantime we have some things you can do with your child while they are at home. We sent out an email yesterday with many online resources and we will continue to provide you with more. None of the resources that we have or will share with you are mandatory and we will not be taking grades for anything that is done. If you do something and let us know by either email or taking a picture of your child doing an activity when we come back to school they will earn an incentive of their choosing.  We would love to hear how all of our kids are doing!

Our goal is to help our families while students are at home. Therefore, we will be sending out resources and activities. We are asking that you communicate with us based on your needs. If you would like more online resources, let us know. We understand that this may be overwhelming so we are trying to scatter our emails, but are more than happy to provide you with more!

Today we would like for students to work on Raz kids for reading in both English and Spanish, Khan academy for math, and they can do activities on abcya for both reading and math.  On abcya they can choose Kinder or 1st grade activities.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Spanish Resources

Here are some fantastic resources in Spanish that you could use at home with your children while our school is temporarily shut down. It is important to all of us that your child continues practicing their academic and language skills. Please use these websites as a starting point. More resources and ideas will be shared with you as we gather them.

As always, please remain vigilant as you allow your children to access these sites to ensure their safety.

Looking forward to having your children back in our classrooms!

Stay safe everyone!

Message to Parents

Hello Families:

I am reaching out to all my students and their families to provide some information on what to expect throughout our closure. Schools are expected to be closed through March 27. Please take a moment to read the following information. Please respond that you have read it so I know that it reached you.

Academics and Educational Resources:

Teachers have been working to develop lessons and resources that you can work on at home with your children. In addition to all curriculum materials being available online, we have developed an Online Resources website, where you can find various resources to help your child keep up with academics. This can be found under the “Students” tab on our district website, www.LaveenSchools.org.

Please remember that your child will need to log in to our curriculum platforms in order to access the material. If you do not have your child’s login information, please contact me and I can provide it to you. One single sign-on through Google gives students access to all of our digital curriculum programs  Watch this video for details on logging in.

Please be aware that all Laveen schools have strict internet filtering when a student connects from our server. Once you use your personal device, this filter is not available. Please monitor your child’s internet usage as they will be able to explore whatever sites your home computer allows. Be sure to watch this informational video, also on the website, for parents on how to filter home internet, Internet Filters to Keep Kids Safe Online

Internet Connectivity

If you do not have wi-fi or are unable to access the internet at home, Cox Communications is offering one free month of internet access to qualifying low-income families through their Connect2Compete program. T-Mobile is also offering an EmpowerED data plan.

Free Meals for Children

Despite school closures, Laveen schools are providing free breakfast and lunch to all children. Families may visit any Laveen school (except Vista) for a grab & go bag. Breakfast is available from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and lunch is available from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday- Friday.

Children must be present to take a meal. Adult meals are not available. Families do not need to register for meals and there are no income requirements.  Children do not need to be Laveen students. The district plans to expand this service to off-site locations in the coming days.

Child Care:

We know that some parents cannot work without childcare. For families needing this service, Laveen’s Kids Club will operate a day camp program that provides structured activities in a safe, supervised environment for children in grades preschool – 6th. This will take place at two locations, Desert Meadows and Paseo Pointe. The cost is $35 a day or $120 per week (preschool is $125 per week). A three-day plan is also available. The hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Our Kids Club staff is cognizant of the importance of a clean environment and incorporates cleaning with a bleach solution as part of their regular protocol. Children and staff showing any signs of illness will be sent home. Please visit our Kids Club page for details.
