Hello Families,

First, let me say, “Thank you,” to those of you who replied about how you would like to proceed with your child’s learning heading into 2nd quarter (and beyond in some cases).

Next, grades are updated once a week in Synergy for you to view in Parent Vue or with your student through Student Vue. I am going to be updating this afternoon.  If you notice not much has improved or changed since progress reports that could be for a couple of reasons.  Your child isn’t doing much other than participating in the LIVE lesson (and maybe the Nearpod) and when it comes to independent work and quizzes/test he or she maybe just hitting the turn in button or not completing much.  I am trying to be as transparent as possible about effort and academic grades with you.

  • Grade reminders:
    • Effort Grades = LIVE lessons/Nearpod and independent practice
    • Academic Grades = quizzes, papers, projects and assessments
    • Work assigned on a given day is due by 8:00 AM the next morning (district expectation).  I have given some flexibility with that due to family emergencies, illness, doctor/dentist appointments, etc.
      • Example:  Work assigned 9/8/2020-9/11/2020 is all due no later than 8 AM on Monday, 09/14/2020.  I do not accept late work beyond that time.

Classroom Update:

Reading:  This week we will finish reading Washed Up! and start reading from Rain Forest Food Chains.

Writing:  We will finish our informative/explanatory essays by Tuesday.  Students should have selected a topic (ocean, beach, mountain, jungle, or coral reef).  They would have chosen three subtopics about their topic.  From there, we researched facts/details about subtopics.  At this point, we have typed our rough drafts (introduction and body paragraphs).

  • Monday we will write the conclusion and go through revise/edit steps
  • Tuesday we will finish revise/edit and publish our final copies.
  • Wednesday will will start a new task (brochure about the rain forest)

Math:  We are about halfway through Chapter 2 on multiplication.  We have been working on different multiplication strategies (patterns, prime factorization, distributive property, and area models.)  This week we’ll apply those to solve multiplication problems or using the standard algorithm.

Science:  We will finish our unit on Changes in Matter (Concept 1.2).  Tuesday will be the test.

Social Studies:  We will be wrapping up our studies on the American Revolution this week.
