Yaaay we mastered Ch. 5 (a day earlier than planned even!!!!) So on to Ch. 6 which is two-digit addition and subtraction.

  • Adding and subtracting to 20 *********VERY IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE PRACTICING EVERYDAY***********
    • You may use dice, dominos, playing card, flash cards, to create problems for your child to solve in a fun way.
    • For larger numbers (bigger than 6 which is what a domino or dice show) Have them mentally add the sum of 2 dice, domino sides, or playing cards to create a bigger number to add or subtract. For example, throw 2 dice they land on 2 and 3, have them add 2 and 3 mentally (or count up the dots) to get 5 ,then roll both dice again and land on 6 and 6 (mental math or dot count) to get 12. Then you can create 5+12=   ____    or  12-5=_______

Also continue practicing/discussing:

  • numbers that come before and after a given number
  • what teen numbers look like
  • what the plus, minus, and equal sign’s jobs are
  • what is unique about the parts and wholes in addition and subtraction sentences
  • the order that numbers go in when creating addition and subtraction sentences….

Strategy reminders: .They should start with the biggest number CIRCLE IT then count on the smaller number, while hopping ahead. For example 5+7….. circle 7, count up 5 more (8,9,10,11,12). In subtraction it is start with the whole CIRCLE IT  and count back the part. Example: 7-5….circle 7 count back 5 (6,5,4,3,2). This is to try and help get them away from needing to use so many manipulatives to do the counting work as we will start working on bigger numbers soon. Please practice this strategy at home as well. You can use dice, domino, playing cards as fun ways to practice adding and subtracting using the count on and count back with a number line strategy.

We will be working on place value for the next few weeks. This is the order we will cover the content in for next week:

Chapter 6 adding and subtracting two digit numbers

  • Monday: Lesson 1: Add Tens
  • Tuesday: Lesson 2: Count On Tens and Ones
  • Wednesday: Lesson 3: Add Tens and Ones
  • Thursday: Lesson 4: Problem-Solving Strategy: Guess, Check, and Revise
  • Friday: Lesson 5: Add Tens and Ones with Regrouping

****Please note that this may change based on the students mastery. If they need another day on the content covered this would alter the line up. I will keep you updated on any changes. ******
